This can be difficult as most of the time stray dogs are just abandoned without reason. But even the staff at the pound will be able to tell you a little about the dog you have chosen this will put you on the front foot when you get your new dog home.

Once home things will need to move very slowly. It may fell as you are getting nowhere but the longer the dog is with you and you show it compassion and love the quicker it will come around.

Remember: most dogs that come from the pound will have been abused so it is a real trust issue coming home to a new owner.

It is important to establish trust with a rescued dog slowly. It is important not to force yourself on the dog. The animal will begin to seek you out once they have learned to trust you.

Many dogs are food driven so using treats to build trust can help. Try stepping back a bit after putting a treat on the floor. Avoid direct eye contact. It is important to praise them once they take the treat.
