My new Christmas puppy was a wonderful surprise, what I didn’t expect were the many unwanted surprises that followed. I’ve had dogs all my life but always my mom and dad had done the heavy lifting of potty training the dog. I remember it wasn’t always pleasant to be around as dad tried to make the dog bend to his will. When he was at work mom usually worked things out with the dog so at the end of a couple of weeks dad could be proud of him self for potty training dog.

Living on my own I had this mixed view of what needed to be done with a new puppy and as I tried to apply it things weren’t going well. Being an internet child I searched and found some online dog training videos that included a section on potty training dog. It was great training that not only handled the situation at hand but had other, far reaching, benefits.

As you potty train your dog you will learn positive reinforcement and you will learn to be persistant, patient, and consistant. Your dog will come to understand that the rules are always the same and she will appreciate that you let her know when she does something right. if your dog is older you will probably have to reverse some old habits. You need to become aware of what your dog does before relieveing herself. You have to do your homework and watch for the patterns and signals. When you see them let the take the dog out or to the place she should use. When the dog goes in the new place praise and reward her. It is that simple. Of course puppy potty training is a little easier since there is no behavior to unlearn.

As this process was getting the dog potty trianed I found an unexpected benefit. The positive reinforcement methods being used were becoming a part of my, a part of the way I acted in the world. Train the trainer as they say, as the dog was trained so was I. My relationships are working better, I find myself using positive reinforcement and patience with the people around me and they are responding. Not only are they more cooperative but they tell me of the nice transformation that I am going through. They don’t realize that the dog trainging has become second nature to me and that I am using it with them but that is what is happening. It’s true, dog potty training has changed me in a most unexpected but wonderful way.

By: Renee Pullman

About the Author:

Dogs are certainly among man’s best friends. However, in some circumstances, these animals also have the potential to be people’s and other animals’ worst enemy. As canines, dogs are equipped with sharp teeth and attacking techniques that make them dangerous when provoked and you have to deal with dogs’ aggression.

Dogs occasionally attack people and other dogs or animals. You may wonder what makes dogs behave violently. In truth, dogs are peace-loving and do not easily turn aggressive, unless provoked. Because dogs’ mode of communications and concepts are different from man’s and from other animals’, there are some actions that maybe perceived by them as aggression or dogs’ aggression.

It is instinct of any living animal, people included, to protect itself when there is imminent danger. Remember that dogs just turn aggressive whenever they feel like they are threatened. And beware of dogs’ aggression, because dogs are truly destructive and rowdy when they get really angry.

Dogs’ aggressive behavior

There are several types of aggression that influence dogs. Such dog’s aggressions are different and nature and are acquired by the dogs during different situations. To be able to learn how to properly and effectively handle dogs’ aggression, it would be important if you would understand the nature of dogs’ aggression.

The first type of dogs’ aggression is dominance aggression. This type is exhibited when the dog feels like he is the dominant organism in the area. This is not common to dogs, but studies suggest that this type of aggressive behavior is relative to the particular breed of dogs. Of course, fighting dogs are more likely to feel dominant.

If the dogs feel that someone, or some other animal, is threatening this sense of dominance, he would likely stage an attack. Several of your actions, like raising hands, clapping or tapping its head, could be interpreted by the dog as breaching its dominance or trigger dogs’ aggression, so beware.

The other type of dogs’ aggression is protective in nature. If the dog feels like you would attack it, it would surely retaliate in defense. The same goes for fear-motivated dogs’ aggression. If there is fear, the dog would not think and act naturally, making it become jittery and become aggressive.

There is a territorial sense in the dog, so if someone or some other animal intrudes its territories, the dog would turn aggressive. Dogs’ aggression could also be redirected. If the animal becomes mad at someone, but could not possibly attack him, the dog could redirect his aggression into someone else.

Dealing with the dogs’ aggressive behavior

Now that you have a brief but concise background about the nature and possible causes of dogs’ aggression, you now understand what and how dogs could turn rowdy and dangerous. Make sure you try not to arouse feeling of threat or fear into the dog so it would not behave aggressively.

For sure, you now know some of your mannerisms and actions that could make your dog behave aggressively. Avoid doing those actions when the dog is around to prevent any possible attack or dogs’ aggression.

If you could not help the aggressive behavior, it would be better to seek professional help for dogs’ aggression so your dog could not harm anyone else. Prior to doing so, confine your dog inside a secluded place or a cage. Never let it loose free because it might suddenly attack or bite bystanders and other animals.

Do not punish the dog because doing so would only make the animal behave more aggressively. Because you are the smarter between the two of you, your dog and yourself, be more understanding and patient.

Do you want to know how to curb your dog’s aggressiveness? Put an end to the stress and annoyance of your dog behavior problems and slash your dog obedience training time in half by using techniques that give you immediate results.
In training dogs, the most important tool you have to acquire is the dog training collar. This type of collar is the very fundamental tool used to train your dog some basic tricks as well as sport dog training, obedience training, and even expanded training without having to hire the services of a professional dog trainer.

Services like these can be quite expensive. Hence, trying to train your dogs using dog collars can save you lots of money.

Dog training collars are specially designed collars to put your dog under proper control. It guides them on what to do, such as the proper way to behave in public places when instructed to.

These collars facilitate obedience training and enable the dogs to learn the necessary obedience commands such as heel, stay, and sit.

Up until recently, there were not a lot of choices in collars for training. Now, thanks to revolutionary collar enhancements, dog owners can now choose from a wider array of dog training collars.

However, the abundance of these collars is not at all advantageous to some degree. With so many choices, dog owners find it difficult choosing the best collar for their pets.

It is a well-known fact that not all dog training collars are created equal. Each has its own varying intensity when it comes to efficiency, affordability, and functionality.

Hence, it is best to consider some factors affecting your collar choices. To help you out, here are some things that you need to reflect on before deciding on a particular collar for your dog.

1. Size

Of course, this aspect matters most. It is important that the collar will fit comfortably on your dog’s neck. Do not make random guesses as to how long the collar should be.

Before going to the pet shop, try to measure your dog’s neck by using tape measure or any string or tape that can be used as a guide. Then, try to make some allowances, say, 2 to 3 inches more. You can never be too sure about the actual length of the item; hence, it is best to make room for extras.

2. Budget

Each type of dog training collar may vary from the most affordable to the most expensive. Among the different types of collars, the electronic dog collar is the most expensive. Since it runs electric current throughout its mechanism, the actual value for this collar is quite expensive.

If you cannot afford to buy expensive ones, you can always resort to cheaper collars. However, the efficiency of developing positive results is lower than the best collars available in the market today.

Keep in mind that quality is always partnered with value. Hence, the better the quality, the higher the value.

3. Function

Some experts do not approve of using the electronic training collars. The infliction of pain tends to create inhumane act towards dogs. Hence, if you think you can still train your dog without having to hurt them, you can try the other types of collars.

Just keep in mind to choose dog training collars according to the function that you need. For instance, if you do not want to use inhumane devices such as shock collar but would still want to tame down a wild dog, you can use the pronged collar instead. It is ideal for dogs that are hard to control.

Indeed, buying dog training collars can be quite tedious. However, once you have considered these factors, buying the best collar is possible.

By: Lee Dobbins

About the Author:

No matter how much you love your dog, you would definitely go ballistic once you have seen that your favorite dress has been trampled on, your shoes peed on and your beautiful rug has muddy paw prints all over. In order to prevent such disasters from happening, you need to successfully house train your dog as early as possible. It would really be nice if at a young age, when your canine companion is just a pup, you would already be able to discipline and teach your pet proper pooch etiquette. Much like a child, a dog needs to be taught and disciplined before it can truly be part of your family.

Below are some basic tips that will help you effectively and successfully house train your dog:

Know your dog. Dogs, like people, have different personalities. You cannot expect your new dog to behave exactly the same as your previous puppy, despite numerous training hours. Dogs also need to be able to express themselves and let out their real nature.

To successfully house train your dog, you need to first determine the nature of your dog, its own personality quirks and traits. Observe your dog for a few days before you start the training. See the natural tendencies of your canine friend, particularly when it comes to pooping and urinating. Some dogs like to relieve themselves on dirt or grass, while others on sand or gravel.

If you know the natural tendencies of your dog, it’s easier to successfully house train your dog. For example, if your pup likes to urinate on concrete or hard floors, ensure that the designated poop and urinating area that you will assign is similar to its designated or preferred areas.

Allocate a small training area to successfully house train your dog. Another important factor that will help to successfully house train your dog is designating a small and specific area for training session. If you have a small dog, you can use a crate as a perfect training location. However, if your dog is big or is already an adult, you might want a bigger area, like a part of your garage, basement or bathroom to conduct training sessions.

It would be good to spend a lot of time with your pooch in the training area you have specified, this will help you to successfully house train your dog. At first, you will notice that your dog might start soiling and urinating in your training location. However, if you let your dog sleep, eat and play in that area, sooner or later it will stop soiling the place. Even dogs do not like to poop in their own sleeping and eating area.

Provide your beloved pooch a toilet area. After giving your dog a chance to determine or realize where its training or playing area is, you should now start introducing your pup to its toilet kingdom. To successfully house train your dog, it is best to accompany your dog to its poop and urinating space a few times so that it will be accustomed to the place. Dogs are usually good at developing habits; thus, if you teach them to do their “thing” on the designated areas, they will soon pick up the habit on their own. As mentioned earlier, remember the dog’s nature in choosing a perfect toilet area.

Regular meal times. Like people, dogs also follow a certain body clock. Therefore, if your feeding time is regular and consistent, you are helping reinforce the pooch’s house training. After a few days of regular feeding or meal time, you will realize that the dog’s poop and urinate periods are also consistent and regular. And you will feel proud for doing a good job to successfully house train your dog.

If you have tried everything and you’re still stuck with the same old disobedient dog, then you need help from the experts to successfully house train your dog. Did you know that you can learn powerful techniques to solve any dog behavior problem in the shortest possible time?
Have you ever wished you could train your dog the way they are trained in professional obedience schools that you see on television or in your neighborhood dog training obedience schools? Home dog training is very possible for even the average dog owner, and you don’t necessarily need dog obedience classes to have a well trained dog. Pet obedience is within the reach of all dog owners if they just learn proper techniques.

While free dog training is very possible if you want to do-it-yourself you must first dispel many of the myths that surround dog training. Once you understand the truth behind dog behavior (the stuff they teach you at expensive obedience schools) you will be able to have the dog of your dreams.

These are all things I often hear about obedience training a dog. Some of them MAY have some truth but none of them are absolutely true:

1- You need to wait until a puppy is at least 4/6/8 months to start obedience training- Truth be told, you can start obedience training your puppy from the moment he gets home. Don’t ask too much at eight weeks of age but get started right away.

2- You can’t obedience train an older dog- I almost prefer an older dog when doing obedience training. Older dogs have developed bodies, developed minds, and developed nervous systems. What that means in relation to training is that you can ask for high level of obedience from an older dog.

3- Obedience training should be done only with treats- Treats are great tools for reward. When they are used as a basis for a training program they are most often ineffective versus big distractions. Think about it, if your dog is chasing after a cat going towards a busy street is he going to continue chasing the cat or return to you to get a little treat? Chances are he will continue chasing the cat towards disastrous results.

4- Obedience training should be done only with discipline. If you use only disciplinary measures in training a dog you may end up with a dog that is obedient. You will also end up with a dog that obeys out of fear.

5- Certain dogs can’t be trained- I have never met a dog that could not be trained. The only dog that theoretically couldn’t be trained at minimum to an adequate level would be a dog with a chemical imbalance in their brain. This type of dog is rare.

At pet obedience classes and your neighborhood dog obedience school you can find out how to dispel more myths about how to train a dog. If you are looking for FREE dog training, though, it is recommended that you search your library, the internet, and dozens of other resources to learn the best way to get your dog to be obedient without going to obedience classes.

By: Ty Brown

About the Author:

There are so many different ways that people look at dog training. You can use a positive reinforcement method, you can yell at your dog or you can even stoop so low to buy a shock collar for them. The first thing everyone should try is the positive reinforcement for dog training. There is no wrong way to go through this process. For example, the dog whines to go outside, you let the dog out and after he does his business you tell him what a good boy he is and had him a treat. Every dog is going to want to please you; it’s in there nature. You don’t have to yell or physical abuse a dog to get them to do what you want. Carry a bag of treats around with you when you are trying to train your dog. This is a benefit to you and your dog and will also help him pay attention more.

If you are trying to get your dog to sit, you have to constantly use the same tone and offer a treat while making him obey your command. This is a great way to get them to cooperate while training them. Also anytime you see your dog do something they should then you should praise them and constantly keep in mind that they need to hear that just as much as a person does when they do something right. This method of dog training does take time but so does every other method. This way will ensure that you aren’t harming your dog in any way and will get them to understand better on what you are asking from them. Just remember when using this method you should stay consistent and use the same phrase. Don’t jumble back and forth between get off or stay down because they won’t understand you.

If you keep using the same phrase then reward them when they listen they will understand they get the treat when they do that. There are many ways to keep dog training positive. You should keep your treats with you so you can reward your dog whenever he does something you want him to continue doing. This way it will stick in there mind that’s the right thing to do to please you. There are many people out there who love this method of dog training; it’s definitely a great way to get your dog to love listening to you.

By: Mike Hickmon

About the Author:

/>Many people have begun the task of getting there dog or puppy into a dog training school. There are a lot of aspects that are gone over in dog training classes. Unfortunately, one part of dog training that is not gone over very well in dog training classes is chewing.

It is hard to go over a chewing problem in dog training classes because dogs often have nothing to chew on or destroy while in the class! If you are one of those people who are in dog training classes, but you still need help with chewing, please read on.

This type of dog training can be for dogs young and old. Many people find this part of dog training to be more common in puppies. But older dogs have been know to need this type of dog training because they love to chew things up while their owners are away!

To begin this type of dog training, you must first realize that all dogs chew. Dogs need to chew. So when you begin, make sure you have several things that are ok for your dog to chew on. Then begin your dog training by keeping all of your dogs chewing toys in one location.

This way, your dog will learn to associate this spot with his or her chew toys. You must do this in order for this type of dog training to work. Try to have the dog toys in a “toy box” for your dog.

During this dog training, never spank or hit your dog if you catch it chewing on something it is not allowed to. Instead, for effective dog training, praise your dog and pet it when it chews on what it is supposed to chew on.

It has been shown that dogs respond much better to positive praise and positive dog training. If the dog continues to chew on things that it shouldn’t, verbally reprimand it. Your tone of voice will be enough punishment and is the only punishment necessary for this kind of dog training.

Another method of dog training you can try is to put a taste deterrent on the items your dog shouldn’t chew. This Dog Training chew deterrent is called “bitter apple” and it is available at most pet stores.

These are the most effective means of dog training that will teach your dog not to chew on inappropriate things. If you follow all of these aspects, your dog training should go more smoothly.

Dog training can be a fun and rewarding experience…as long as all of your favorite things aren’t chewed up in the process! Keep calm and be patient to achieve good results

By: Amy Howells

About the Author:

Crate training a puppy is easier than crate training a dog as it is younger than the dog and follows your instructions more than dogs do. You can start to crate teaching it by developing habit of staying inside the crate for long time with your puppy. At the beginning, you will face a bit difficulties in developing habit of staying whole day inside the crate if it did not live inside the crate from the very beginning when you bought it but as puppy learns more quickly than dog, the habit of staying inside the crate will soon develop if you give it your full attention.

Open the door of the crate of your puppy seldom. Do not keep opened the door whole day. So, your puppy will assume that the crate is the only place where it can live. Give food regularly to your pet in the crate. For entertainment inside the crate, give it a ball for playing with. There are many different types of toys you can use. A rope ball is always very popular with all types of dogs and can keep them amused for hours. Another thing you can try is a chew stick or bone; these are very good for entertaining and keeping your pets gums and teeth healthy.

You also want to make sure they get a healthy night’s sleep. For enjoying sweet dreams inside the crate, you must give a neat and clean bed sheet. It is better to clean the crate daily, especially if you are feeding your dog in it. Dog food and water can make quite a mess. Your puppy remains happy and healthy in the crate when it is clean.

Crate training a puppy has many significant benefits. The most significant benefit of is that your house remains clean when your puppy lives inside the crate as it cannot make dirty your house when it does not come out of the crate. Another benefit is that it can protect itself from any torturer thing when your puppy lives inside the crate. Another benefit is that you can lock it inside the crate when someone comes at your home that is afraid of it.

During the training process, spend maximum time with your pet so that you may establish only those habits which you want to see and those habits may not establish in it which you do not want to see in it. During training, all members of a house must visit the crate so that it may recognize them and may protect itself from the unknown enemy.

In short, crate training a puppy teaches it how to live in the crate, about the benefits of living in the crate and protects it. It is better to buy a crate for a puppy instead of let it wandering here and there. When you buy the crate, make sure he enjoys living in it. Always prefer to bring favorite food and things and never give it anything from which it may feel fear or dislike the given thing.

By: Andy Ayres

About the Author:

Dog training collars are obviously necessary and very effective tools in dog training. The dog’s collar is the point of physical control that the trainer uses to make contact with the dog. There are many different training methods and styles used by professional trainers and as a result there are many different types of training collars. A quick check of on line pet supply retailers will find even more collars available in the market. You will find that each one has its own unique set of features that makes them ideal for specific types of training.

The standard variety, like leather or strong nylon is most advisable when simply training a dog to do basic stuff such as sit, jump, or stay. This is dependent of course on the size of the dog. Nylon collars are ideal for smaller dogs. Leather collars are ideal for bigger dog breeds. Nowadays, those who want to train their pet dogs for simple everyday commands even have the option to choose embellished collars. But for dog training, high quality collars should be given more preference.

Basic choke collars are one of the best dog training collars around. Choke collars give the trainer instant correction and control by tightening the collar around the dog’s neck. During the training session when the dog is behaving in the proper manner, or obedient in following commands, the collar stays loose and comfortable around the dog’s neck. In the event however that the dog starts misbehaving or commits a training mistake, the trainer can easily tighten the collar as a way of correction. This technique communicates to the dog the proper response to a command.

Prong collars, or pinch collars are another widely used dog training collars by professional trainers. This kind of collar has dulled tips on the collar surface touching the dog’s neck. Like the choke collar, the trainer can control the tightening and loosening of the collar. As a way of correction, the trainer will pull the collar and the blunted tips will tighten around the dog’s neck, without piercing his skin. It is important however to maintain caution in using these collars. There is a thin line between constructive correction and animal abuse. This type of collar should really be left to the professional trainer or handler.

Electronic and citronella training collars are very popular with many dog trainers. They are especially useful in correcting dog behavior when the dog is not on a lead. It is also very effective in aversion training like that used to train hunting dogs to avoid rattlesnakes and porcupines. The remote controls on this type of collar has the ability to make corrections from as far away as one mile. Correction is accomplished through either electronic stimulation or a spray of citronella once the command is given via the remote control. These collars also have a tone feature where the handler can communicate with the dog by sending a set of tone commands to either approve of a behavior or to warn the dog to correct its behavior prior to receiving stimulation.

No matter what training methods are employed by the trainer a quality dog training collar will be required to achieve the training goals. Wisdom and discernment should always be used when using any training collar. Failure to do so may result in unwanted behaviors or even physical damage to the dog’s health.

By: Jim Kesel

About the Author:
